St. James Baptist Church, which later became Greater St. James Missionary Baptist Church over the years, had its beginning in the early 1900s as Sunday school meetings. The location of the school house was where Nesom Elementary School is today. The Sunday school meetings became church meetings and the first organized Black church in Tickfaw was established/dedicated on February 4, 1918.
